The restaurant exploded with cheers.<\/p>\n
My brothers, Eric and Sean, high-fived each other. My sister-in-law started crying happy tears. My mother smiled like she had personally invented generosity. Even the kids started chanting, \u201cHawaii! Hawaii!\u201d<\/p>\n

That was the truth. I had been tired for years. Tired of being told I was lucky because I had \u201cfreedom,\u201d then having that freedom treated like empty space everyone else could use. Tired of missing holidays because someone\u2019s child had a fever. Tired of being called selfish whenever I asked for one weekend to myself.<\/p>\n
Sean leaned back in his chair. \u201cSo you planned a solo trip and didn\u2019t tell anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s weird,\u201d his wife muttered.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s weird,\u201d I said, \u201cis assuming I would take ten days off work to watch six kids without being asked.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eric laughed sharply. \u201cYou love the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI do. That doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m their third parent.\u201d<\/p>\n
My mother put a hand to her chest. \u201cAshley, your father and I wanted one special trip with our children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mouth opened, but nothing came out.<\/p>\n
Dad jumped in. \u201cBecause you\u2019re the only one available.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI own a business.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou take pictures,\u201d he said dismissively.<\/p>\n
That one hurt, but only for a second. My photography studio paid my mortgage, my bills, and every emergency loan my family conveniently forgot to repay.<\/p>\n
I pulled my phone from my purse and opened my calendar. \u201cI leave Monday morning. I\u2019ll be in Maui until Friday, then Kauai for five days. My studio assistant is handling bookings. My house sitter has my spare key. I will not be home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sean\u2019s wife frowned. \u201cWait, if you\u2019re gone, who\u2019s watching the kids?\u201d<\/p>\n

Lily looked from her father to me, confused. \u201cAunt Ashley, are we not going?\u201d<\/p>\n
Eric forced a smile. \u201cSweetheart, adults need vacations too.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut Grandpa said the whole family.\u201d<\/p>\n
My father cleared his throat. \u201cIt was just an expression.\u201d<\/p>\n
That did it.<\/p>\n
I stood up.<\/p>\n

I looked at the kids first, because they were the only innocent people at that table. \u201cI\u2019m sorry you found out this way. You deserved honesty.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then I looked at the adults.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou planned an adults-only vacation, announced it as a family trip, used the kids\u2019 excitement to make yourselves look generous, and expected me to disappear into the background as free childcare.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eric snapped, \u201cDon\u2019t say it like that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow should I say it?\u201d<\/p>\n
Sean crossed his arms. \u201cYou\u2019re making everyone uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cGood,\u201d I said. \u201cMaybe discomfort will help you remember your own children exist.\u201d<\/p>\n
My father stood then, towering over the table like he used to when we were kids. \u201cAshley, enough.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the first time in my life, I did not shrink.<\/p>\n
