I walked into the charity gala surrounded by twelve breathtaking women, convinced the spectacle would finally make Emily jealous.
Every one of them was a successful model, entrepreneur, or influencer I had invited through business connections. Their laughter echoed through the ballroom while cameras flashed around us. I didn’t want any of them. I only wanted one woman to look at me with regret.
Emily.
She stood near the grand staircase in a soft pink gown that somehow outshined every expensive dress in the room. She wasn’t trying to compete. She didn’t have to.
For three years, we’d loved each other in silence after our relationship suddenly collapsed without explanation. Every time I tried to ask why she’d walked away, she avoided the conversation. Every time I reached out, someone interrupted us—a canceled meeting, a mysterious business emergency, an unexpected family obligation. Eventually, I convinced myself she’d simply stopped loving me.
Tonight was supposed to prove otherwise.
As I approached with the women surrounding me, conversations around the ballroom faded.
Emily slowly lifted her eyes to meet mine.
No anger.
No jealousy.
No heartbreak.
Only quiet acceptance.
She glanced at the women beside me before softly asking, “Is that all?”
Her calmness hit me harder than any insult ever could.
I stepped closer, unable to hide the frustration that had been building for years.
“Why won’t you fight for us?” I whispered through clenched teeth. “Why do you always pretend you don’t care?”
She looked into my eyes, and for the first time I saw exhaustion instead of indifference.
“I never stopped caring, Ethan.”
“Then why?” I demanded.
A tear formed but never fell.
“Because someone already decided we could never be together.”
Those words froze my entire world.
“What are you talking about?”
She opened her mouth but suddenly stopped.
Across the ballroom, my father had arrived.
His cold stare locked onto Emily.
The color instantly disappeared from her face.
Without another word, she turned and walked away.
Confused and furious, I followed her into the empty hallway.
Just before I reached her, my father grabbed my shoulder.
“Let her go,” he said quietly.
Emily never looked back.
For the first time in years, I realized the woman I loved hadn’t been running from me.
She’d been running from someone else.
And standing behind me… was the man who had raised me.
I pulled away from my father’s hand.
“What did you do to her?”
He adjusted his tuxedo as if I had asked about the weather.
“I protected this family.”
“Answer me.”
His expression remained perfectly calm.
“Emily isn’t suitable for you.”
The words ignited something inside me.
“You destroyed our relationship because you didn’t approve?”
“It wasn’t personal.”
“It was my life!”
He sighed before leading me into a private lounge overlooking the ballroom.
“You were preparing to become CEO of our company,” he explained. “Investors expected you to marry into another influential family. Emily came from an ordinary background. She represented uncertainty.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So you forced her to leave me?”
“I gave her a choice.”
My heartbeat stopped.
He continued without guilt.
“I offered her enough money to pay off her mother’s medical debt.”
My stomach twisted.
“In exchange,” I whispered.
“She disappeared from your life.”
Every missing phone call.
Every canceled date.
Every unanswered message.
None of it had been her choice.
“You manipulated both of us.”
“I gave her an opportunity.”
“You blackmailed her.”
Silence filled the room.
I stormed out before I said something I couldn’t take back.
Outside the ballroom, I finally caught Emily standing alone on the terrace.
She didn’t seem surprised to see me.
“You know.”
I nodded.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She looked toward the city lights.
“Because he promised he’d destroy your career.”
“I didn’t care.”
“You would have.”
She smiled sadly.
“You loved your father back then.”
“No.”
“I did.”
Those words shattered me.
“I couldn’t be the reason you lost your family, Ethan.”
I stepped closer.
“You became the reason I lost myself.”
For the first time in years, she allowed herself to cry.
“I thought one day you’d hate me enough to move on.”
“I tried.”
“I know.”
“I failed.”
She laughed through tears.
“So did I.”
Just as I reached for her hand, another voice interrupted us.
“If you touch her…”
We both turned.
My father stood in the doorway.
Only this time he wasn’t alone.
Behind him stood members of our company’s board of directors.
“If you choose her,” he announced loudly enough for everyone to hear, “you’ll never inherit this company.”
The terrace fell completely silent.
Every eye fixed on me.
My future stood on one side.
The woman I loved stood on the other.
For the first time in my life…
I didn’t hesitate.
